This Monday, June 1st is yet another adventure in the world we like to call the Bluegrass + Beyond jam, 7:30pm at Paddy Reilly's Pub (SW corner of 2nd and 29th).
Last jam - forever to be known as the "infamous Cm jam" - was another great one. Lots of good material.
Highlights for me had to be the great guitar picking. We're really lucky to have Scottie and Bob - 2 very different, but equally solid pickers to fill out every song - even if they do choose to perform songs about horses and singing cowboys... but at least they don't yodel!
As a side note, Scott can now die and go to heaven - he said he never thought he'd see the day when he'd lead an Elton John tune at Paddy's.
Speaking of picking, I don't know if any of you have noticed, but Leslie's really good on the mandolin! Too bad she lives in Massachusetts. I'll have to think up a cool nickname for her like "California" has - I wonder what I could use?
To show you the advantages of getting there early, co-host Bill and my wife, Sarah, starting jamming on Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin" during the setup, and wound up giving it a decent whirl later during the jam.
Phyllis chose an interesting version of "I Am Endorphin Girl" by Gillian Welch - must be a Japanese anime character or something. There'll undoubtedly be a summer blockbuster out soon - "Go Speed Racer Vs. Endorphin Girl".
Anina's cover of local legend Andrew Hunt's song was a good use of the Beyond format. Although not as Way Beyond as Andrew's Georgian folk song - no comment there, except that at least he didn't yodel and it wasn't in Cm...
The jam low-light had to be my aforementioned Beatles classic "What Goes On" - complete with it's Cm. Rest In Peace... and just to make sure that the people who did play on that one would soon be flummoxed, I followed it with a Dillard's classic - "There Is A Time" in Dm. Doesn't everyone play bluegrass in Dm? I'm an equal opportunity jam buster!
A rare sighting of "Slow Jam" Sue occurred. She had obviously heard of the stellar leadership qualities of Bill and myself, and was hoping to catch our lightning in a bottle for her own jam. Or, more likely, she couldn't wait to try out her new melodic banjo version of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" in Eb major in 2-part harmony! (that's a banjo joke...)
Speaking of rare sightings, was that Liz and, later, Chris I saw? (and what was that thing he was playing...)
Keep up the good work,
