Shake off those post - Valentine's Day blues with songs of relationships gone bad and other tales of death and dying this Monday, the 16th, 7:30 at Paddy Reilly's Pub (SW corner of 2nd and 29th).
Be happy your loved one's name isn't Polly or Willie and that your plans for Saturday didn't include a walk along a deserted old mill stream with a bloody dagger (or one of a hundred variations - see Harry Smith's Anthology for details).
For me personally, love and music will always be intertwined - as I met my wife playing music and proposed to her at the Carter Family Homestead in Hiltons, Virginia. Of course, I also met Bill playing in the same group, but he didn't accept my proposal... So if you're single and need a reason to play music, need I say more?
The real news of the week is that the rest of the world is finally catching up with the Bluegrass + Beyond concept. The awarding of 5 Grammies to Alison Krauss and Robert Plant seems to indicate that after years of floundering in the musical abyss, the music world is coming around to the fusion of bluegrass, pop and rock. Now if only those two could learn "Jumpin' Jack Flash", I'd put 'em on the e-mail list...
Co-host Bill had his fiddle tune itch scratched by the re-appearance of Andrew - who apparently has given up blues for flatpicking. And who knew that Liz could play those tunes like that on the guitar?
We were also graced by modest Dave's bass playing - a rare treat to be savored, at least in Manhattan! The best.
Oh yeah, and what actually happened when Neil the bartender blew through a couple times to do a few numbers - like a North Sea storm off the Irish coast? I'm still recovering - although I put him on the mailing list anyway.
See you Monday, and Robert bring Jimmy along with you - acoustic only please!
